The next morning Laszlo woke to the tantalizing smell of coffee and hot food.

“Good morning, husband,” Davina said brightly.

Wincing at the reminder of his new relationship status, Laszlo opened one eye. Davina wore a whimsical white sleeveless blouse, white linen shorts and a sheer, pale-blue scarf around her neck instead of jewelry. Her lips looked shiny, her cheeks a little more rosy and her hair was a gorgeous honey blonde, artfully tousled.

She kissed his cheek and then wrinkled her nose. “You have scratchy face.”

“Yep. Every morning. I’m a hairy guy. What can I say?”

“Here, let me.” She drew a finger down his cheek and just like that, his morning beard was gone. She smoothed a hand over his scalp and, voila, no stubble there either. He rubbed his jaw with thumb and forefinger and appreciated how nice it was not to have to lather up and shave.

“What do these mean, anyway?” she asked, tapping one of his tattoos.

“The dagger is from the story of Knute,” he said. “I admired his tenacity. The grinning skull I got because I was trying to impress a girl, and the lizard is a chameleon.”

“Why a chameleon?” she asked, even though she really wanted more information about the girl.

“No reason,” he answered. “I just like chameleons. Now, please tell me, where the heck are we? Because we sure aren’t in Monterey anymore.”

“Okay. Okay, get this! We’re just outside of Sorrento, Italy.” Sitting cross-legged on the mattress next to him, she swept an arm toward the picture window that encompassed one wall of the huge bedroom. “If you go out on the patio there, you’ll see the Bay of Naples and the island of Capri.”

Noticing he had on a pair of gray silk pajama pants, he got out of bed and stretched. Being married to Davina definitely had its advantages, advantages he hadn’t anticipated. This luxurious palazzo for instance. The terrace alone could accommodate fifty people with its various seating areas, outdoor kitchen and pool. There was even room for a dance floor if so desired. And he hadn’t even seen the whole place yet. For all he knew, there could be ten more bedrooms grander than the one he and Davina were using. Elvis lay at Davina’s feet, his tail wagging at Laszlo’s approach.

“Guess what’s for breakfast?” she asked, having followed him outside.

Two silver domes kept their meals warm. Visible was a shiny coffee service with all the amenities, carafes of juice, champagne in an ice bucket, more flowers and a pair of lovebirds cooing on a perch adjacent to the table.

“Eggs benedict?”

Her eyes sparkled with amusement. “Good guess, but no.”

He gave it some real thought as he opened the champagne. Considering Davina’s lavish tastes, he suggested, “Crepes.”

“No.”

“Omelets with lobster, chives and roasted red peppers?”

She toasted him with her drink. “That sounds great for tomorrow, but no.”

“Cheerios.”

Shaking her head, she laughed, a musical sound that made him smile. “Do you give up?”

“Yeah,” he answered, genuinely curious now.

With a satisfied smile, she put her glass down
